The Atkins Diet – Why Exercise Is Very Important
The Atkins Diet is still a very popular diet plan, even if it is not quite as popular as it once was. However what many people who stick to this diet do not appreciate is that exercise is a very important part of this particular diet. It has been shown that even moderate amounts of exercise can help you reach your weight loss goals.
When you exercise regularly you boost your body’s metabolism (as well as your circulation). Furthermore if you exercise vigorously you will sweat a lot, which helps release toxins that build up in your body. Diets that involve a low consumption of carbohydrates, such as the Atkins diet, help regulate your blood sugar, and exercise helps enhance this effect even further.
So what kinds of exercise should you do when sticking to the Atkins diet?
Well you basically have two main options – aerobic exercise and anaerobic exercise. Both have their benefits, but ideally you should combine them both to give yourself the best of both worlds.
Aerobic exercise is the kind of exercise that leaves you out of breath and works up a sweat, whilst anaerobic exercise is more to do with strength and resistance training. Aerobic exercise, such as running and cycling, for example, is best for weight loss because you will generally burn more calories and strengthen your cardiovascular system.
You shouldn’t necessarily start off by attempting to burn off hundreds and hundreds of calories all at once. It is better to start off slowly and increase your workload gradually, otherwise you will find things difficult and you may even injure yourself if you body isn’t used to a lot of physical exercise. If you cannot handle tiring exercise such as jogging or swimming, then start off by doing a lot of walking as even this will increase your fitness levels and give you a base from which to work from.
You should find that this type of exercise will help shift some excess weight. Once this starts to happen, you can think about incorporating some anaerobic exercise such as weight training into your routine as well. This form of exercise is useful for building muscle and toning your body. Therefore it can be really beneficial once you have lost a decent amount of body fat because it will give your body better definition.
Anyway the key point is that it is pointless going on the Atkins diet, or indeed any other diet, if you are not going to get any exercise. By consuming low carbohydrates and working out regularly, you will find it a lot easier to hit your weight loss targets, and you should do so a lot quicker as well.
