Vision Sankara Examines Eyes of 420 BMC Employees

The blessing of sight and the boon of vision was celebrated with great gusto at the vision screening program organized by Vision Sankara at BMC office in Grant Road, Mumbai. More than 400 employees were screened by the team of experts of Vision Sankara. The vision screening program was organized by Vision Sankara Eye Hospital, Malad West in conjecture with BMC.

Mr. Devidas Kshirsagar, Assistant Commissioner of the BMC D Ward inaugurated the event as the esteemed Chief Guest. On this occasion he commented, "It was a challenge in India for aam adami to receive affordable eye care services. But today thanks to the efforts of organizations like Sankara Eye Foundation of which Vision Sankara is a part, world class eye-care services are available to the people. We are truly grateful to Vision Sankara for organizing this screening program and would be happily ready to provide you our services whenever needed."

The event brought out the stark reality of a poor reach of eye care services in urban India. Nearly 30% refractive errors and other eye problem cases were detected during the camp. These patients were directed to the Vision Sankara Hospital at Malad in Mumbai to receive further eye treatment. The 'Mission for Vision' initiative partnered with Vision Sankara, committed to distributing spectacles to all the employees present.

Dr. Ashish Bhacchav, Vision Sankara Says, "the major gap between the rich and poor was an issue that the Sankara group considered seriously in their effort to make eye care services accessible to the urban India."

Sankara Eye Foundation is a Non Profit NGO and is part of the Sri Kanchi Kamakoti Medical Trust founded in 1977 at Coimbatore with a vision to provide quality eye-care. With the goal of replicating one Sankara Eye Hospital in every State in India, the group is working towards freedom from preventable and curable blindness - " Vision 20/20 by the year 2020 " - wherein no one would be needlessly blind.

The foundation comprises of 13 eye hospitals consisting a team of 200 doctors, 600 paramedical professionals, 275 support staff and total bed strength of 1800.Sankara works on a 80:20 model where 80% of the beneficiaries are the rural poor who receive totally free eye-care while the balance 20% are the affordable sections of the society, who pay for their treatment thereby cross subsidizing the free eye-care services. It has performed over 1.3 million free eye-care surgeries and 500+ eye-care surgeries have been performed in Sankara Hospitals.
